EARLY LITERACY SCREENING

Early literacy screening is part of a province‑wide BC Ministry of Education and Child Care initiative to ensure all young learners receive strong, early support in learning to read. The Ministry is implementing the use of literacy screening because early reading skills develop quickly, and timely information helps teachers respond before small challenges become reading difficulties.

Will my child participate in early literacy screening assessments?

In Surrey, children in Kindergarten through Grade 3 take part in brief screening assessments up to three times a year, guiding teachers to adjust instruction so every student continues to move forward with confidence.

The screening includes short, standardized checks with each child that provide a snapshot of essential reading skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and early word reading. Screening helps Surrey teachers understand how young children are developing the foundational reading skills they need for future success so they can plan instruction, identify students who may benefit from extra support, monitor growth over time, and ensure every learner receives the right support to become a confident reader.
