CURRICULUM & LEARNING

BC CURRICULUM RESOURCES

The English Language Arts curriculum outlines the knowledge, skills, and understanding students develop from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Literacy learning includes speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing ideas across a variety of formats, including print, digital, visual, and oral texts.

Students engage with a wide range of meaningful and age-appropriate texts, including First Peoples, Canadian, and multicultural perspectives. Teachers select texts that are both accessible and appropriately challenging, helping students build strong literacy skills while fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of learning.

What literacy learning can I expect for my child during the first few years of school?

Surrey’s Early Literacy Learning Continuum outlines the key reading and writing skills children typically develop from Kindergarten to Grade 3, giving teachers a clear picture of the learning children work toward each year. It aligns closely with the BC Ministry’s Learning Progressions, which describe how foundational literacy skills grow over time. Together, these tools help teachers plan instruction, monitor development, and provide the right support at the right moment, so every child builds strong, confident early literacy skills.
