For many teachers, the morning routine includes greeting students at the door. Some students need eye contact and a nod, while others may share an exciting bit of news or ask a question. These brief moments offer an opportunity to build community and connect with students. The students then move into the classroom to complete bell work or engage in a soft start while the teacher continues to attend to the door and emerging needs. This routine provides a transition for both teachers and students as they prepare for the day’s learning.
In the online classroom, the virtual space looks different. There is no door and raises several questions about online learning: How can teachers establish online routines? Will teachers be able to effectively communicate these pieces without being physically present? How can teachers communicate to students that they are present, engaged, and excited to begin the day?
How are you replicating your opening routines in the online classroom?
