Reading aloud with purpose is an essential activity that supports literacy engagement and growth for all students, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds! In this session, you will explore ways to intentionally plan your read-alouds to build your students’ background knowledge, content learning, vocabulary and language comprehension. Other aspects of literacy addressed through read-alouds include phonological awareness, print concepts and language skills. There is also evidence that read-alouds support social and emotional wellbeing of all students including students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and at all levels of language acquisition.
