Explicit instruction can be used to support English Language Learners (ELLs) to learn content and to support English language acquisition using the four language modalities: speaking, writing, reading and listening.
In this workshop we will explore how to use explicit instruction to support:
• cognitive demands as students learn both new content material and skills as well as a new language
• learning new concepts and skills
• the language to think and communicate about new concepts and skills.
• constructive learning by building discovery learning goals into objectives and by modelling processes
• acquisition of new vocabulary related to thinking processes, content and communication of learning
We will also explore:
• the importance of models and examples
• how to structure guided practice for whole groups, small groups and independent work
• check for understanding and provide feedback
