WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Come and learn how to build classroom community with culturally responsive teaching. Why? Because research shows culturally responsive classrooms positively impact student achievement, improve student engagement, and build a positive class culture.

This workshop will:

  • share practical ways to incorporate students’ cultural identities and lived experiences into your classroom.
  • introduce a community vs. non-community lesson plan that can be used to create class shared understandings during school start up.
  • provide strategies to discuss difficult conversations or topics that arise in the class using circles, read alouds, and loose parts.
  • introduce a community unit plan that is culturally and historically responsive.
