Does text always have to be a book? In many classrooms, written texts are still viewed as the central way to access and show understanding. However, today’s learners need to engage with a much wider range of communication forms – and they also need support in developing language skills to think critically about what they encounter.
This interactive workshop will explore how multimodal texts – specifically images, music, videos, and podcasts – can be used intentionally to develop students' critical thinking. With careful scaffolding and language instruction, multimodal texts can support critical dialogue across a diverse range of subject areas and student interests. Come prepared to turn your camera and/or microphone on and to engage in critical thinking!
