Most learners in the senior grades can work directly with their teachers on assigned work in all subject areas. Parents can help by lending a little help, support and guidance, and by knowing what problems require their attention and which do not. To help your children manage their workload, consider the following strategies.
Clarify Established Routines
- Ask about routines/schedules their teachers have established for the week. Are they connecting virtually? By phone? What day(s)? Time(s)? What are they working on this week?
Be There
- Don’t hover when they are doing homework, but be there in case they ask for help.
Listen
- When you teenager wants to talk about their school work, encourage them to figure out approaches and solutions to what they are working on.
Maintain Contact with the School
- Be in touch with teachers, counsellors, LST support and school administration. Stay informed and keep staff informed, especially if you feel your child requires additional support and assistance.
Encourage Reaching Out for Additional Support
- Teachers are available for extra help. Encourage your child to reach out and phone/email/connect virtually and ask for help, if needed.
Encourage Maintaining Contact with Family and Friends
- Routines that foster connection are a core part of school, friendships and family life. It is important to feel connected to a supportive community to help support well-being and connectedness. Encourage your children to reach out virtually and to keep in touch with family and friends.
