Land Based Learning

Land Based learning is a pedagogical approach that is based in Indigenous ways of knowing and being. In this approach, the land itself serves as the primary teacher. Lessons foster stewardship of the land, reciprocity, and connecting to the environment around you. The goal is to holistically integrate the mental, cultural, spiritual, and physical parts of learning by viewing the land as co-teacher and relative. Land-based learning supports language revitalization, the sharing of traditional stories, and the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations.  It involves direct, hands-on experiences outdoors, to learn directly from local environments about cultural practices and knowledge systems. Land Based learning is rigorous – it is not simply going outside to learn what you would have learned inside or going for a nature walk. It contributes to reconciliation efforts by promoting a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous perspectives, leading to greater ecological stewardship and cultural reciprocity.
