How do I teach my face-to-face students and my online students at the same time?

There are several ways to teach your face-to-face students and your online students at the same time, but this is one method that works:

  1. Invite your personal email address to your class team as a guest (Don't know how to create a guest account? These instructions will show you how). Complete the account set up so that your personal email address can sign in to Teams as a student.
  2. Use a tablet stand or a phone stand to hold your tablet or smartphone at an appropriate angle (see below for tablet stand options). The tablet/phone will be your "teacher device."
  3. Connect a laptop to a projector. The laptop will be your "student device." On the laptop, sign in to Teams at teams.microsoft.com and sign in with the guest account (i.e. your personal email address). You may need to use an incognito or private window.
  4. On your tablet/phone, start the meeting. Optional: you can tap the white camera icon (see image below) to switch from using your device's front-facing camera to the rear camera.
  5. On your laptop, join the meeting with your student account (i.e. your personal email address). Make sure that you have your laptop's microphone and speakers turned off. Open the participants panel, click on the ellipsis next to your teacher account, and click on "Pin" (see image below)
  6. The students in class will see you on the big screen, and the students at home will be able to see you as well.
