In this inquiry, teachers will develop an understanding of disciplinary literacy and implement explicit science literacy strategies in the classroom to increase student comprehension of scientific texts and concepts. Teachers will be encouraged to identify a specific literacy competency that they will track for growth over time. Using student evidence of learning and teacher reflection, participants will reflect on the evidence, revise, and engage in further learning and planning.
10 teachers from 5 schools (teams of two per school), will come together at DEC for one full release day to develop an understanding of disciplinary literacy and plan strategies to increase comprehension of science texts and concepts. Teachers will be supported in implementing these strategies with classroom visits, side by side mentoring, and co-planning. A second full day release (date TBD) will be used to follow up and support teachers in their inquiry at their school site.
