PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Routes to Writing (Workshop Series)

DETAILS:

Presenter: Ginny Tambre
Date: January 23, 2023
Time: 3:30-5:00pm
Location: Virtual

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This workshop series is for primary teachers wishing to focus on strategies and routines to engage and nurture young writers. Young children are already writers and illustrators! This series will explore how to nudge their text creation along progressions of writing development by leveraging each learner’s choice and joy throughout the creative process. We will consider how mentor texts demonstrate and model the writer’s craft and how feedback provided by teachers during the writing process is essential to moving learning forward. Throughout, we will celebrate and acknowledge each writer’s ideas and approximations en route to becoming a confident and proficient writer!

Teachers are welcome to select one of two “routes”:

ROUTE 1: VIRTUAL ONLY – Participating teachers attend three virtual sessions presented by Matt Glover (co-author of How to Become a Better Writing Teacher) on January 23rd, February 29th and April 16th from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. Details about each session is outlined HERE.

ROUTE 2: VIRTUAL & IN-PERSON – This route is for school teams wishing to go deeper! Participate in Matt Glover’s three virtual sessions on the dates above, plus two in-person sessions on February 8th and April 4th (between Matt’s sessions) to continue learning, collaborate, and receive support throughout your focus on early writing instruction. In-person sessions will be held at a to-be-determined location, possibly at a school site near interested teams. School teams may consist of 2 or more teachers. This route includes a picture book and a professional resource (per teacher) that we will dig into during the in-person sessions.

Either route is a good choice for teachers who attended Matt Glover’s October dinner workshop in Surrey and wish to continue learning. Teachers who are interested in either “route” are welcome to express their interest HERE.
