DESCRIPTION:

2025-26 brings an opportunity for elementary schools to engage in a new professional learning initiative. Whether teachers are just beginning their numeracy journey or looking to refine their practice, this initiative offers a supportive space to grow, connect, and lead change in your school community.

This two-year cohort will dive deeply into the three interwoven elements of Surrey Schools’ upcoming Numeracy Framework: rich learning experiences, effective teaching practices, and inclusive learning environments. Guided by this framework, school teams will take a deep dive into one of the following core themes:

  • Problem-solving
  • Sense-making
  • Communicating
  • Belonging

The Commitment: What to Expect in Year One:

  • School teams will consist of two to four classroom teachers, or “Math Leads”, and one administrator.
  • Math Leads will join colleagues across the district for two, possibly three, all-day workshops.
  • An invitation to attend the “Math Matters” launch the last week of August will mark the first session (details to follow, including a mid-September option).
  • Math Leads will be supported by Marc Garneau or Chris Hunter over the course of two years – side-by-side in classrooms and supporting colleagues in schools.
  • Regular touchback and collaborative planning sessions will deepen numeracy understanding and practice, building confidence and capacity as a math teacher.
  • Additional release time will be provided to school teams (details to follow).

In the second year, we will deepen our collective learning by encouraging Math Leads to open their classroom doors and share their evolving practices. Through classroom visits, reflective conversations, and collaborative inquiry, Math Leads will support their colleagues by modeling what they’re learning—about their students, their teaching, and themselves.

Application Considerations:

When forming your school team, please consider Surrey Schools’ Leadership Competencies to ensure a strong foundation for shared leadership and professional growth.

If your school’s Student Learning Plan has a Numeracy focus, this initiative will serve to complement and guide the team.

Please complete one Expression of Interest per school by Friday, June 13th.

* Should the number of schools exceed budget capacity, we will contact schools directly.
