Finding Out What They Have to Say: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Music Classrooms

DETAILS:

Presenter: Jonathan Sykes
Date: November 10, 2023
Time: 9:00am-2:00pm
Location: Guildford Park Secondary

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Come and join your colleagues in an exploration of culturally relevant and responsive teaching, and how we can apply this modern pedagogy in our music classrooms. CRP is student centered, honours the knowledge our students bring with them into the classroom, and in a musical setting focuses on giving voice to our students and developing the artist within each of them. Through conversation and reflection, we will uncover strategies for developing the whole musical child, in order to find out what they have to say with music – not just tell them what they should say.

Jonathan Sykes is the music teacher at Guildford Park Secondary, one of Surrey's most diverse and underprivileged catchments, where he looking to question the status quo of music education and discover how to best serve the students and community in front of him. While this session is geared slightly more towards secondary teachers – as this is where Mr. Sykes' experience lays – there is something for everyone here, and all music teachers are welcome.
