Early literacy has been available in Surrey for many years and the success of that early support is reflected in the performance of Surrey students in our data. Comparatively, the data for numeracy proficiency in Surrey students scores much lower in the data. This initiative proposes to build on the success of the early literacy model to support the development of an early numeracy program. There are currently 7 schools in Surrey that receive funding for 0.1 FTE early numeracy. Currently, this 0.1 FTE does not have a structured support system. I would like to invite the tier 1 inner city schools, Holly, Hjorth Road, Forsyth, Lena Shaw, Betty Huff, WE Kinvig and KB Woodward, to participate in a supported pilot for early numeracy. The structure for the pilot will be similar to an advocacy model, where the ELT will receive extra training in early numeracy, which will take place after lunch on the days when the monthly early literacy meetings are scheduled in the morning. The ELT will collaborate with 2 classroom teachers (these teachers might change per term) to increase capacity in early numeracy learning, assessment and intervention.
