Reading comprehension is the ability to interpret and understand what is being read, or to make meaning from printed text. This ability involves a collection of interdependent skills, all of which play a role in supporting understanding. These skills can be loosely categorized into two main areas of development: word reading & language comprehension. Due to their interdependent relationship, the skills within both areas are taught concurrently rather than sequentially.
