Reading comprehension is the ability to interpret and understand what is being read, or to make meaning from printed text. This ability involves a collection of interdependent skills, all of which play a role in supporting understanding. These skills can be loosely categorized into two main areas of development: word reading & language comprehension. Due to their interdependent relationship, the skills within both areas are taught concurrently rather than sequentially.
Based on research models of reading known as the Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986) & Scarborough’s Reading Rope (Scarborough, 2001, Cutting & Scarborough, 2012).
