What is it?

Coached Writing takes place as learners try out what they learned during Modelled and Shared Writing while their teacher provides responsive feedback and scaffolding. It can occur in small groups, or in a writers workshop format where the teacher confers with individual learners as they write. Regardless of the format, the learner has the responsibility for creating the text and the teacher provides support as needed.

Why?

Coached writing provides a supported space for learners to try their own hand at creating text. It enables learners to take risks, perhaps attempt a technique or skill, knowing that support is nearby if needed. At the same time, teachers provide “in-the-moment" targeted instruction in response to individual and/or small group needs.

During Coached Writing:

Teachers are...Learners are...
listening to writers share their texts throughout the creation processactively writing or creating text
observing learners to see where support is needed, and making decisions about where to draw individual writers’ attentionapplying the techniques, strategies and writing behaviours learned through modelled and shared writing
providing scaffolded support as needed in the form of strategies or actionable feedbackproblem solving and self-correcting
encouraging learners to thoughtfully extend their texts or celebrating writers’ growthseeking support as needed, possibly from peers
emphasizing the process of writing over polished productssharing writing that is still in-progress to gather feedback and ideas
providing space and time for learners to get feedbackgaining experience using the language of giving and receiving feedback
