The creation of a diverse range of texts supports writers as they find, understand and develop their voice. The exploration of a variety of text types allows learners to construct and communicate their understanding and personal meaning while fostering their confidence as writers of oral, visual, written, digital and multimodal texts.
The BC ELA Curriculum reminds us that text refers to all forms of oral, written, visual and digital communication. This includes, but is not limited to:
Oral Texts: oral stories, role play, speeches, podcasts, poems
Visual Texts: illustration, loose parts, photos
Written Texts: novels, short stories, articles
Digital Texts: electronic forms of all the above
Many texts are multimodal where meaning develops and is communicated through two or more modes. These texts can take shape as paper-based (illustrated article), electronic (animation) or live (oral storytelling).
Gradual Release Model
Image colours reflect the role of teacher and learner as readers move from observation and supported practice to greater independence.
