Exploration of a diverse range of stories and other texts helps readers understand themselves and discover the world around them. Comprehension of a variety of text types creates opportunities for learners to consider new ideas and multiple perspectives. This contributes to the affirmations and discoveries that foster engaged citizenship.
The BC ELA Curriculum reminds us that text refers to all forms of oral, written, visual and digital communication. This includes, but is not limited to:
Oral Texts: oral stories, role play, speeches, podcasts, poems
Visual Texts: illustration, loose parts, photos
Written Texts: novels, short stories, articles
Digital Texts: electronic forms of all the above
Many texts are multimodal where meaning develops and is communicated through two or more modes. These texts can take shape as paper-based (illustrated article), electronic (animation) or live (oral storytelling).
Gradual Release Model
Image colours reflect the role of teacher and learner as readers move from observation and supported practice to greater independence.
