Creativity is at the heart of writing!
Consider offering a variety of materials which support children bringing their ideas to life on the page. Toss aside the journal notebooks and invite children to select writing paper based on the idea they plan to write. You may find that children who are able to write many words and even full sentences may select a blank sheet of paper to create a comic strip, whereas children in pre-alphabetic phases may wish to write letter-like symbols on lines as the text of their story.
Consider offering writing paper of various colors, sizes, and shapes, or folded blank booklets and pamphlets as invitations for creativity. Below are simple writing paper templates:
