“Good readers are made, not born.”

In recent years, advances in sciences have contributed to a clearer understanding of how the reading brain works. This recorded workshop explores how the reading circuit is built in a reader's brain and what key skills children need to learn through systematic and explicit approaches to become fluent readers. This workshop was presented in August of 2022.

What is explored in this session?

- What is the "Science of Reading" and how might teachers interpret their implications?

- What changes are happening in the brain to build a reading circuit?

- How might teachers instruct and prompt early readers in ways that make sense to their reading brains?

- What is the impact of the types of text we provide for children as they are teaching their brains to read?

- When is the time for decodable text, and why would teachers use them?
