"Rethinking Phonological Awareness: Focus on What Matters!" is an examination of years of research around phonological and phonemic awareness. Dr. Susan Brady interprets results from numerous studies and explains how they disrupt the long-held belief that phonemic awareness develops from understanding larger parts of words and syllables to smaller units of sound. A handout from the session can be found here.

Topics include:

- The developmental sequence of phoneme awareness
- The importance of conducting phoneme awareness activities with letter knowledge and handwriting
- The benefits of this approach for all students

A follow-up Q&A webinar delved deeper into the most surprising learning from Dr. Brady's session. The Q&A session is linked below.

Dr. Brady is a professor of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island, with expertise and passion in the areas of literacy, language factors that impact literacy learning, and translating sources of research in ways they can be implemented in classrooms for successful student learning.
