UFLI Foundations is a systematic and explicit phonics resource that equips teachers with routines and strategies to explicitly teach foundational reading skills. Surrey schools can order the resource through Learning Resources Services using Stock ID 186715.

UFLI Foundations includes essential components such as:

  • Phonemic Awareness: Helping students recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken words.
  • Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences: Teaching the relationships between letters and sounds.
  • Blending and Segmenting: Guiding students in combining sounds to form words and breaking words into individual sounds.
  • Decoding and Encoding: Supporting students in reading and spelling words accurately.
  • Irregular High-Frequency Words: Introducing and reviewing words that don't follow regular phonetic patterns "heart word" language.

High-Leverage Phonics Routines

UFLI Foundations follows a systematic approach to phonics instruction. Sound-spellings are taught and practiced through eight routines:

  1. Phonemic Awareness
  2. Visual Drill
  3. Auditory Drill
  4. Blending Drill
  5. New Concept
  6. Word Work
  7. Irregular Words
  8. Connected Text

Predictable routines support students to systematically acquire each phonics skill and learn to apply them with confidence and automaticity. The resource is designed to be responsive to students' needs, providing ample opportunities for practice and gradual release of responsibility.
