A set of letter cards is helpful for primary teachers when teaching young children about the alphabetic principle. During whole and small group instruction, these cards can be used for explicit teaching and shared practice of phonemic awareness, sound-spelling relationships (also known as "phoneme-grapheme correspondences") and decoding.
ALPHABET CARDS
Each lowercase letter of the alphabet, with uppercase on the reverse. Vowels are printed in red.
EXTENDED GRAPHEME CARDS
The alphabet cards set, plus additional common graphemes such as digraphs, common vowel patterns and r-controlled vowels. Find examples of the phonemes (sounds) represented by the grapheme (letter pattern) on the reverse of the common grapheme cards.
Make the cards:
1. Download and save the letter cards file.
2. Select 'double-sided' when printing the cards to print the uppercase and lowercase forms of each letter card. Consider printing at a professional printer/office supply store on cardstock paper.
3. Cut the full-sized pages in half to create two cards.
