“Every point in a child’s development of word-level reading is substantially affected by phonological awareness...” (Kilpatrick, 2015)

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness resources support daily systematic phonological and phonemic awareness instruction as a supplement to existing early literacy curriculum. The classroom resources are designed for brief, explicit instruction and are available for three levels of complexity:

  • Pre-K (recommended for Kindergarten)
  • Kindergarten (recommended for grade 1)
  • Primary (recommended for grades 2-3)

Explore samples of daily lessons, as well as the scope & sequence of each resource here.

Find video examples of hand motions that accompany the lessons here.

Heggerty resources are available in SD36's Learning Resources catalogue. Learn more about phonological and phonemic awareness from a recorded workshop, "Nurturing Phonological Awareness", found HERE.

The below recorded workshop "Making the Most of Heggerty" unpacks how to utilize a Heggerty resource in a way which targets the most important phonemic awareness skills. This session was recorded in August of 2022.
