Reading aloud to children not only increases the amount of words they hear each day, but exposes children to new words not commonly used in conversation. Therefore, frequently sharing interesting books of different genres and topics contributes to increasing the breadth (number of words known) and depth (richness of understanding) of children's word understanding.

In the below video clip, Tanya S. Wright, author of A Teacher's Guide to Vocabulary Development Across the Day, demonstrates how she plans for and infuses vocabulary learning through reading a picture book aloud.
