Nesting - Numeracy

INVITATION TO LEARNING

CONNECT

Provide students with 2 of the nest pictures included with the root lesson.

What shape are the nests? What other words can you use to describe them? How are the nests the same?  How are they different?

EXPLORE

What objects can you find that have an attribute that is the same as one or both of the nests? Look in your home, yard and/or neighbourhoood.

Can you estimate how big each nest is?  Which one is the biggest?  What strategies are you using to estimate (How can you tell which is biggest)?

How many eggs would fit in each nest?  How did you decide?

RESPOND

  • Make a drawing of a nest.  It can be a nest from the pictures or your own drawing of a nest.
  • Write or have someone help write words that describe the attributes of the nest.
  • Draw or write something that is:
    • About the same size as the nest.

    • Bigger than the nest

    • Smaller than the nest

    • The same shape as the nest. Name the shape.

    • The same as the nest in another way. Say how it is the same.

  • Make a video or ask someone to help you write your strategy for estimating the size of the nest and which is bigger.
  • Make a drawing that shows how many eggs fit in the nest.  Can you show that the nest can hold different numbers of eggs?  What will effect how many eggs fit in the nest?

Success Criteria:

  • Can estimate by comparing the nests to something familiar (the hand or flowers in the picture for example)

  • Can identify basic attributes (colour, size (big/small), shape, etc.)

  • Can compare to other objects and find objects that would go in the same “category”

  • Understands that the size of the eggs or putting other objects in the nest will effect how many fit in the nest

Sample Responses:

  • I think that one is a tiny nest because I see the person's hand in the picture and it is a lot smaller. This other nest is bigger because it is almost as big as the person's whole hand.
  • I think that only one chicken egg fits in because I have held a chicken egg and it is almost as big as my hand.  The nest is about as big as my hand, so that would fill it up.
  • The bird is probably tiny because it built a tiny nest, so it probably lays tiny eggs, so maybe the nest can fit 5 of those eggs.

CURRICULAR COMPETENCIES and CONTENT

NUMERACY

  • Estimates size and capacity reasonably by comparing to something familiar.
  • Uses reasoning to explore attributes of objects .
  • Explains and justifies strategies for estimating, comparing and sorting objects.
