DESCRIPTION

Nualang (Wayside Publishing Learning Site) is a web-based language learning program. This site contains a variety of online ebooks with teacher guides and student assignments and games in French and Spanish.

TOOLS & FEATURES

Once a teacher creates a class, they can add a roster of students and manage each student’s activity on the site. This includes: tracking whether digital books have been completed, whether assignments have been completed, documenting acquired skills/knowledge, assigning performance ratings based on level of fluency in the target language, and assigning/documenting grades, uploading written/audio/video feedback to students.

For many titles, a student portfolio is included, which contains student self-assessment tools and also allows teachers to give their students written, audio or video feedback.

DISTRICT USE: APPROVED WITH CAUTIONS

Nualang is approved for secondary (Grade 8-12) use in the Surrey School District. See privacy info below.

PRIVACY INFO

Teachers can and should set their classrooms and courses to Private at all times. This limits who can enter, what people can see and who can see comments, feedback, and progress reports.

Several of the functions on this site involve the use of audio recordings, video recordings or chatbot conversation transcripts that are saved on the platform. Teachers should use caution when asking students to use audio and/or audio/video recording features. Teachers should use caution when assigning activities, and actively avoid setting up conversations that include the sharing of personally identifiable information. (name, age, date of birth, home address, etc.). Since many of these conversations are recorded and saved, they represent a potentially significant privacy risk especially when paired with the student’s account information.

Teachers are reminded that recordings of students (audio or video) should be deleted as soon as they have been reviewed for assessment/feedback/grading.

ACCESS STEPS

  1. Click HERE to go to Nualang
  2. Teacher accounts can be set up using First Name, Last Name, district email address.
  3. Student accounts also require First Name, Last Name, Email address. Profile photo is optional and can be uploaded but students should be strongly encouraged to use an avatar, not a personal photo.
  4. Teachers can invite students to a class or course using a class/course code, but students must establish an account to join.
  5. As an extra security measure, teachers may also generate and use a special enrollment key as a means of trying to exclude non-class members from joining. Class members would then need all of: an account, a class/course code and the special enrollment key to join a class.
