Scribble-writing, drawing, symbols that look like letters, or random letters are all important beginning stages of writing development for young children. Families can best support young children’s writing by encouraging them to express their growing understanding of words in these ways.
Pre-writing skills develop through frequent opportunities to draw and write. Examples of meaningful writing opportunities around the home include:
- shopping lists
- thank you notes /cards/letters to friends and family
- meal plans or menus • recipes with directions
- recording family stories
- creating a book by folding pieces of paper in half or staple them together
- have your child label their drawings
