    GET READY

    1. Make sure Minecraft Education Edition is installed on your devices (Macs, Windows PC's, and iPads). Contact the IMS ServiceDesk if you need the app installed on your devices. If students would like to download the app on their personal devices (at home or at school), they can download it here. The Minecraft Education app runs on macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and ChromeOS. The current version of Minecraft Education is 1.20.13. If your students are building together in a hosted world, everyone needs to be running the same version of the app.
    2. Make sure your students know their district email addresses and passwords. Teachers can change their students' passwords in the Staff Portal. Office staff can also reset passwords via MyEdBC.
    3. Print out your students' email addresses and passwords and distribute them to your class so that they have easy access to it (we recommend gluing them into your school planners).
    4. Practice hosting a world and building with your students. Work on developing communication and collaboration skills as you work together to accomplish a task. There are a number of build challenges in the app that you can try (Play > View Library > Monthly Build Challenges).
    5. If a Build Team wants to collaborate asynchronously on their build, practice exporting/importing and sharing .mcworld files using Microsoft Teams/OneDrive/AirDrop. If you're using iPads, these videos will show you how to export/import/share .mcworld files on mobile devices). If you need support with using Teams/OneDrive/AirDrop with Minecraft Education Edition, contact us.
    6. Download the Minecraft Challenge Planning Kit and read through the FAQ's.

    RULES

    GENERAL RULES

    1. You must use the Minecraft Challenge Template for your build. Please stay within the gray borders that have been created in the world file.
    2. Only Minecraft Education can be used.
    3. Teachers can help their students plan their build, but students should do all of the building themselves. Teachers can put down guide blocks (that can be removed afterwards) if their students need help figuring out where to build. For example, a teacher can put down guide blocks if they are dividing the whole build into smaller areas for different Build Teams).
    4. Students can build at school and/or at home. Students may use Teams or OneDrive to transfer .mcworld files back and forth between home and school.
    5. Animals and NPC's (i.e. non-playable characters) are optional.
    6. Every student who wants to participate must be part of a Build Team, and they may only be a part of one Build Team.
    7. There are many ways to create your Build Teams. Students can build together as a whole class, an IESW or Childcare Worker can create a lunchtime Minecraft Building Club, a classroom teacher can break their class up into smaller Build Teams of 4 students, etc. Note: Build Teams must consist of students from the same school.
    8. Maximum Build Team size: 30. Minimum Build Team size: 4.

    SUBMISSION

    1. Every Build Team must have a staff sponsor. The sponsor could be a classroom teacher, a teacher-librarian, an IESW, an administrator, etc. A staff member may sponsor multiple Build Teams. The staff sponsor will submit each Build Team's project to us, one by one (i.e. one form submission per team) through Microsoft Forms.
    2. Build Teams may also choose to submit a video (3 mins. max) and/or a PDF (created with the Minecraft Education's built-in camera and book & quill). Note: Build Teams will only be judged on their .mcworld file, but creating a video is a great way to showcase the work that they've done and share it with the school community.
    3. The due date for submitting your build is Friday, Mar. 8, 2024.

    CRITERIA

    • Our judges will use this criteria to judge each build.
    • One winner will be chosen from each category (i.e. Primary, Intermediate, Secondary).
    • Some Build Teams will also be invited to join us at REC for our annual Minecraft Celebration on May 17, 2024

    TIPS FOR TEACHERS

    1. Before you start hosting a synchronous build, change your settings. Here are the settings we recommend.
    2. Divide and conquer! Break up your entire build into smaller, more manageable chunks......and let smaller groupings of students work on different parts of the build.
    3. Here are a number of Minecraft Education videos that can help you get started.
    4. If a Build Team is working asynchronously, make sure they rename the .mcworld file whenever they upload a new version of it. Students can use a Microsoft Teams chat group (or a class team) to collaborate on a build together.
    5. Here are some classroom management tips from Minecraft mentors.
    6. If students are hosting worlds from home and having trouble connecting with others, port forwarding may help create a more stable connection.
    7. When you build in Minecraft Education, your world is saved on the device that you're using (unless you're playing in a hosted world). This means that you must use the same device every time you play. If, however, you are hosting a world for your students, your world will be saved to your device and students can use different devices every time they play.
    8. Use Google Maps or Apple Maps to get satellite images of the area you're trying to build in.
    9. Download the Minecraft Challenge Planning Kit and our Minecraft Education FAQ's document.
    10. Use this list of considerations to help your students generate ideas for their build.
