Storytelling

In Indigenous communities, lessons, histories, and other knowledges are passed down through storytelling. Many Indigenous societies depend on oral traditions as a form of record keeping where the speaker and the listener communally entrench what has happened that day into the community’s history.

The structure of Indigenous stories generally differs from Eurocentric stories. Learning about these differences, as well as understanding protocols when working with Indigenous stories is key to using them in a respectful manner. Ensuring you have permission to share the story you are working with, as well as acknowledging the owner of the story when sharing, are important parts of said protocols. Please start with Dr. Jo-Ann Archibald’s website below to embark on this work.
